NOV/DEC AND NOT A LOT

Ok. I'm really bad at maintaining a blog. I see that now.
Let's play a little catchup. Firstly let me explain that lately when I don't "have to" I almost never shoot digital. Everything has pretty much been on 35mm film or peel-apart instant film.
I've been experimenting a lot with my polaroid land camera and testing how it reacts with different light. I've also started a new sketch journal to hopefully eradicate the problem of me losing and never keeping track of all the little scribbles I do.
More blog posts to follow when I get motivated to write and scan pictures.

PROVIDE

Building on from the series Vessel (posted a few back), I created this series as the final chunk of my folio for this second semester. Titled Provide, it is in summary about mans dependance on nature as a provider. I wanted to make a photographic ode to where all human activity originated.

CHILDISH FEAR

This was a uni assignment about symbolically representing a public space that had some significance to us. We were challenged to think beyond just a straight image. I approached the series form the angle of wanting to represent a park from my childhood of which I feared being left in at night. The images were shot at night using either torch light-painting or strobes. I then illustrated some small creatures and scanned them and placed them within the photographs. Ta da!

VESSEL

Here we have exhibit A. This is my mid-semester assignment. I wanted to look at the idea of the human body being of earthy elements and returning to the earth after death. This probably isn't a series that I am completely sold on personally. But I always enjoy an excuse to make my family play dead and mess around with lighting.

SEPTEMBER

I realise this post comes a little late but September has been hectic. I'll recap for you.
A lot of this month has been spent trying to get together all my last assessment pieces for this semester. Amidst all the chaos my older sister had her wedding which I had the massive pleasure of photographing. I got questioned by police while of a shoot in which I was trying to stage a burial,  threw myself into a disgusting creek and spent a lot of time in the bush doing semi-illegal-ish things for photos.
It feels like uni is really the only thing on my plate at the moment, which is nice I suppose. I eagerly anticipate finishing this year so I can temporarily move back home and spend the hot summer days in the pool with my family, out camping or working on some personal projects.

BRISBANE

I can fondly remember the days during high school which were spent exploring Brisbane City. Things like visiting the photo-booths in Elizabeth Arcade, stuffing myself atYum Cha in Chinatown, striding up and down Queen St, stumbling through GoMA and buying lollies at Southbank. Sadly this city is losing its charming sparkle for me, as I find myself spending more and more time there.
Of course, this dosen't mean I'm giving up on my city, I'm just going to have to try a little harder to find new things to love about it.

AUGUST

I never feel quite right about August. Mostly because it seems like winter is suddenly drawing to a close and the end of the year begins to creep up.
Things have been going well for me I suppose. I'm going to get in to posting again because, to be honest, it was quite fun.
Let's hope I do something interesting then yeah?

INSTANT ROADTRIP

These are the instax photos I shot on the roadtrip to Melbourne and back. Really growing attached to this silly little white camera. There is something so honest and low-tech about the images that draws me in.

MELBOURNE

After moving out of home and into my new place on Wednesday I had a day to myself in which I "settled in". Then on Friday I climbed into a car with three others and began the 2 day drive to the glorious lands of Victoria. I pretty much fell in love with Melbourne. I had heard stories of its greatness but it became a vibrant and culturally thrilling reality being there in person. Whilst staying there we saw a footy game, visited a cathedral, drank a lot of coffee, ate some amazing food, indulged in cakes, explored the markets, marvelled at the architecture and icons, witnessed wonderful (and sometimes silly) attractions, spent a day at the zoo, met some delightful people and spent waaaay too much money on bits and pieces. I can now say with confidence that Melbourne is somewhere I belong. I pretty much didn't even touch a digital camera all week so there is a lot of film and instax scans on their way and I look forward to seeing how they turn out and sharing them. I hope eveyone has had as lovely a time these winter holidays as me.

MOVING OUT

It seems only slightly surreal to be sitting (technically kneeling) at my desk in an almost empty room. It echoes eerily and seems void of all the things that held so much value to me.
My mother always said that I'd be last to leave home. But I suppose the defiant teenager within me wanted to prove her wrong.
My life in now in boxes which are precariously stacked in the back of a van. All that's left behind are a few bits and pieces, flakes of my time spent in this room. I guess most people don't feel this kind of bond to their spaces, but when you have lived somewhere since you were 1 year old it becomes a lot harder to dramatically alter something that had been so concrete.

There is probably 90 minutes to go before I hop in the passenger seat. I don't really know how to feel, it's odd (although perhaps that's because I'm hungry).

SECRET SHED PARTY

The evening of Saturday was quite lovely because I had received invitation to a special night at the Secret Shed Party. It was incredibly enjoyable to see some good friends of mine perform and share their musical talents. I entirely agree with the fact that the best music is that being played right in front of you, nothing really quite compares to seeing a human being express themselves through song. It kind of warms your insides and gives you this contented sensation of peace. Hopefully this will the first of many more musical events.

SUNDAY

Had a leisurely sleep-in until 12 after an absolutely wonderful night and then lay in bed reading/looking at the pictures in a fascinating book
Realised I hadn't touched a computer in nearly 3 days
Dank so much grape juice
Found out I have a pack of "colour border" instax film and am not sure how this happened
And finally realised how much I'm going to miss my room when I move out in a month

JOURNEY

Shot this for a mini project at uni. We were instructed to capture our morning journey to the university (in 6-8 images). The particular methods of my travel are not necessarily anything spectacular, so what I chose to focus on was the time frame spent on each segment. These shots are the result.
